Make a considered choice
Three checks before creating an account
Your goal
Consider conversation quality, feed controls, moderation and whether the people you need are genuinely active there.
Your available effort
Estimate creation time, frequency, moderation and your ability to respond. A sustainable rhythm is the most useful indicator.
Your controls
A public post can travel without its context. Check the source, date and audience before commenting or resharing.
Public monitoring or discussion with selected people?
Following, reply visibility and resharing affect a conversation’s reach. Protecting a profile does not remove existing copies.
Documented differences
- X : Protected posts are visible to followers, who can still capture them. Existing followers retain access. Source ↗
- Facebook : Group privacy and discoverability are separate settings: a private group can be visible or hidden. Source ↗
- Threads : Fediverse sharing allows a public profile to distribute content to other servers, widening its circulation. Source ↗
